It was founded in 1851 and is located on what was once the Harrisburg-Lancaster Turnpike (today Route 230). In 2002 it was designated as a Main Street Community by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The name "Mountjoy" is actually an English name. During the reign of the English Queen Elizabeth, Lord Mountjoy was sent to Ireland by the Queen to destroy the Irish Chiefs. The name went on to be used as a name for a village, fort, castle, street, prison, and ships.
When James II became King of England, his Protestant Parliament forced hime to abdicate the throne. His daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange, where invited to share the throne. James fled first to France and then Scottish Presbyterians who had been planted there by the English throne to counteract the Catholic population. The Scottish Presbyterian remained inside the walled city of Londonderry for 105 days, practically starved when three supply ships arrived to save them.
Within the next thirty years, most of the Scottish Presbyterians left their Irish homeland and came to the colonies. One of the biggest settlements was Donegal, and the settlers brought with them the names from Ireland. Donegal and Mountjoy are two of those names.

Today, Bube's operates as not only a microbrewery, but also as an entertainment and dining mecca.
The Brewery began producing beer again in November 2001 for the first time since 1917. The present day brewery operates in the original brewery's ice house. Visitors are welcome to tour the brewery.

Lancaster County is a popular tourist destination, due mostly to the many plain sect residents, known as the Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch. The term 'Pennsylvania Dutch' comes from the earlier use of "Dutch" to apply to all immigrants from middle Europe. They are the descendants of Germans who immigrated in the 18th and 19th centuries for the freedom of religion offered by William Penn, and were attracted by the rich soil and mild climate of the area.
Lancastrians can easily spot a visitor to the area by how they pronounce the word Lancaster. Locals and people from nearby counties in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware pronounce Lancaster as LANK-ister. This is unusual as most Lancasters in the United States are pronounced as LAN-cast-er, though Lancashire, England, and Lancasters in Texas, Ohio, and South Carolina also use the LANK-ister pronunciation. The inhabitants of Lancaster County speak with the Susquehanna dialect. The Susquehanna dialect is most commonly used in the Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg areas, and incorporates influences from the Philadelphia accent and that of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
