As the oldest inland city in the United States, Lancaster boasts a long and prosperous lineage that dates back to well before the Revolutionary War. In fact, during the war the city was home to the Continental Congress for one day, making it the capital! Many well-known inventions originated from the towns and villages of Lancaster County, for example the Conestoga wagon and the Pennsylvania rifle.

Lancaster County is nationally-known as a home for the Amish, otherwise known as “plain” people, who shun modernities in favor of a simple lifestyle. Amish families own businesses, services and of course farms throughout the county, in particular the eastern portion including Intercourse, Paradise, New Holland, Strasburg, Gap, Gordonville, Bird-In-Hand and surrounding villages. As a result, these areas experience a strong tourist draw every year with bus trips and tours running non-stop. Lincoln Highway, which runs through the heart of Amish Country, is home to several popular outlet shopping complexes Such as Tanger and Rockvale.

Lancaster is becoming more and more popular as a home to the arts. Downtown Lancaster City is where dozens of local artists open their doors late on Lancaster First Fridays, a celebration of creativity that draws hundreds each month. The first few blocks of North Prince Street and the 300 block of North Queen Street have become enclaves for artists to “hang their shingles”. Also in Lancaster City, the Lancaster Museum of Art houses exhibits of Pennsylvania artists and offers art classes to the public. The American Music Theater is a large venue along Route 30 that hosts national performing artists.

Everyone loves to be outdoors, and Lancaster County Parks are beautiful year-round. From the large Lancaster Central Park to the smallest wildlife conservation area, there is plenty of room for hiking, jogging, mountain biking and nature pursuits.
