East Petersburg, PA History
East Petersburg Borough, population about 4500, is located three miles northwest of Lancaster, Pennsylvania on the eastern boundary of East Hempfield Township and the western boundary of Manheim Township, in the Hempfield School District, and showcases both new and historic homes of all ages. The town takes pride in its extensive park system, with bike paths connecting one park area to another. The community park features basketball & tennis courts, playground, ballfield and even a summer children’s program. There is a pavilion and community center building (with kitchen) available for use, as well as a community swimming pool.
As with many small American towns, East Petersburg developed through a combination of entrepreneurial skill and the demands of the times. Three main periods of time can be identified in the area’s history: Up to 1812, 1812 to 1929, and 1929 to the present day.
The streets of historic East Petersburg date back at least to 1799, and probably much further as quiet country roads connecting Lancaster to outlying towns. The history of “East Pete” formally began in 1812 and continues today.
East Petersburg Day
East Petersburg celebrated its 15th East Petersburg Day in September 2009. Each year, the event features music, games, a parade and more.
The East Petersburg Day parade starts at 10 a.m. and includes classic cars, emergency vehicles, the General Reynolds Cornet Band and other musical entertainment. The parade sweeps through borough streets before ending at the community park on Pine Street. There, people can find food from local organizations and a chili cook-off sponsored by the Manheim Township Police Department.
A “cruise in” motorcycle and car show takes place in the afternoon, with a $5 entry fee per vehicle. In the evening, the East Petersburg fire company begins its popular golf ball drop, during which it drops up to 1,000 golf balls from the ladder of the fire truck. The person whose ball lands closest to the hole below wins a $1,000 prize. East Petersburg Day ends with a professional fireworks display at 8:30 p.m.
East Petersburg Historical Society
The East Petersburg Historical Society was established in 1976 to preserve East Petersburg memorabilia and provide education for community residents. Monthly meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. in the community building on Pine Street, excluding June, July and September. In August the Historical Society hosts a picnic in the pavilion of the community park, and in December it holds its annual Christmas party at the Gathering Place in Mount Joy.
In 1994, the society purchased the building at the corner of State and Lemon Streets and renovated it with money received through fundraisers and private donations. Today, the location houses the Historical Society’s gift shop, open the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. There, the society sells building replicas, Dorothy Hollinger prints, crocks, stationary, afghans and other gift items.

The farmlands of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country are among the most productive in the nation. But many of the farmers here are different from most Americans; different by choice. For these are the Old Order Amish and Mennonites, also known as the "Plain People".
Our Amish neighbors have been employing horse-drawn power since the days when horsepower had a whole different meaning! In comparison to our fast-paced society, the simpler, family-centered Amish way of life holds a special fascination.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, known as the Garden Spot of America since the 18th century, is located in the southeastern part of the state of Pennsylvania. The city of Lancaster is the county seat.
Lancaster County is a popular tourist destination, due mostly to the many plain sect residents, known as the Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch. The term 'Pennsylvania Dutch' comes from the earlier use of "Dutch" to apply to all immigrants from middle Europe. They are the descendants of Germans who immigrated in the 18th and 19th centuries for the freedom of religion offered by William Penn, and were attracted by the rich soil and mild climate of the area.
Lancastrians can easily spot a visitor to the area by how they pronounce the word Lancaster. Locals and people from nearby counties in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware pronounce Lancaster as LANK-ister. This is unusual as most Lancasters in the United States are pronounced as LAN-cast-er, though Lancashire, England, and Lancasters in Texas, Ohio, and South Carolina also use the LANK-ister pronunciation. The inhabitants of Lancaster County speak with the Susquehanna dialect. The Susquehanna dialect is most commonly used in the Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg areas, and incorporates influences from the Philadelphia accent and that of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
As of 2005, there were 490,562 residents in Lancaster County, representing 4.2% growth since 2000 and 11.3% growth since 1990.
