Conestoga, Pennsylvania is a small community in Southwest Lancaster County PA, located along the Susquehanna River south of Columbia.
Conestoga was first called Conestoga Manor by William Penn. The name came from the Conestoga Indians, a peaceful Christian tribe, whose principal village was located nearby. It is derived from an Indian term for "immersed pole." The Conestoga are an extinct tribe, the last being hacked to death by the Paxton Boys in 1763.

Safe Harbor Dam
The Safe Harbor Dam, located above the junction of the Conestoga and the Susquehanna, is the last of three hydroelectric dams on the lower Susquehanna River. The dam’s construction began in 1930, and used 730,000 barrels of cement. It started generating power one year later. Five new turbine generator units were added in the 1980s for a total of 417.5 megawatts of hydroelectric power.
In 2001, the Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation won the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence after removing and recycling over 11,000 tons of river debris. President George W. Bush visited the dam for a photo opportunity the same year, putting Safe Harbor and Conestoga in the national headlines.
Frey's Dairy Farm and Turkey Hill Dairy
Frey’s Dairy Farm in Conestoga is the birthplace of Turkey Hill: a brand that includes ice cream, iced tea, and a chain of popular convenience stores and gas stations. The dairy farm sits on Turkey Hill Ridge, a name given to the area by the Conestoga Indians for the wild turkeys that lived there. Today, it produces about 20 percent of the milk used in Turkey Hill products.
Turkey Hill was started during the great depression, when farmer Armor Frey began selling excess milk to neighbors from the trunk of his car. Frey sold the business to his three sons in 1947. In 1954, the family began producing ice cream and including it in its home deliveries.
The Freys opened the first Turkey Hill Minit Market in Lancaster County in 1967, though the stores operated as a separate business from the dairy. In 1974, Turkey Hill became the first company to offer self-service gasoline in Pennsylvania. Turkey Hill was purchased by Kroger in 1979, but the majority of its products still come from Lancaster County.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, known as the Garden Spot of America since the 18th century, is located in the southeastern part of the state of Pennsylvania. The city of Lancaster is the county seat.
Lancaster County is a popular tourist destination, due mostly to the many plain sect residents, known as the Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch. The term 'Pennsylvania Dutch' comes from the earlier use of "Dutch" to apply to all immigrants from middle Europe. They are the descendants of Germans who immigrated in the 18th and 19th centuries for the freedom of religion offered by William Penn, and were attracted by the rich soil and mild climate of the area.
Lancastrians can easily spot a visitor to the area by how they pronounce the word Lancaster. Locals and people from nearby counties in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware pronounce Lancaster as LANK-ister. This is unusual as most Lancasters in the United States are pronounced as LAN-cast-er, though Lancashire, England, and Lancasters in Texas, Ohio, and South Carolina also use the LANK-ister pronunciation. The inhabitants of Lancaster County speak with the Susquehanna dialect. The Susquehanna dialect is most commonly used in the Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg areas, and incorporates influences from the Philadelphia accent and that of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
As of 2005, there were 490,562 residents in Lancaster County, representing 4.2% growth since 2000 and 11.3% growth since 1990.
